Records show Portland City Commissioner candidate Jo Ann Hardesty collected over $10,000 in income last year from her volunteer work at the NAACP. Records and interviews by OPB and other media indicate that the finances of the organization were poorly managed under her leadership. OPB reporter Amelia Templeton joins us with the story.
In the last few years, several prominent alt-weekly newspapers have closed around the nation. Recently, the Village Voice and the Missoula Independent shut down. But Portland still has two alt-weeklies: Willamette Week and the Portland Mercury. We talk with Philip Eil, a freelance journalist and former news editor at the Providence Phoenix, about the decline of alt-weeklies.
Author Renée Watson won two awards from the American Library Association this year for her young adult novel “Piecing Me Together,” which was based on her experiences growing up in Portland. Watson joins us to talk about “Piecing Me Together” and her latest book, “Betty Before X.” We listen back to our interview with her from February.
