UPDATE (Oct. 22, 6:17 p.m. PT) — A body found Sunday in the Willamette River has been identified by the medical examiner's office as 18-year-old Owen Klinger, according to the Portland Police.

The University of Portland student had been missing since Oct. 6.

Susan Lennertz, who helped spearhead the searches for Klinger, said the police had called the family, telling them details about the body that they linked to their son.

Lennertz sent out the following statement, attributed to Owen’s parents, Dustin and Mary Klinger Monday afternoon:

“Portland police have notified us that they have recovered a body that we believe is our son, Owen Klinger. We deeply appreciate the extraordinary effort and support that thousands of people have provided over the past two weeks. We now ask for privacy as we move forward with our healing process.”

The body had been recovered by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Sunday afternoon and turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officers still encourage anyone with information about the case to contact the Portland Police at 503-823-0406.
