Excessive Heat and Smoke Sunday

Temperatures around the Humboldt Bay area willremain in the high 80s through mid 90s Sunday, with triple digit heat inland.

The National Weather Service is reporting that the heat will peak today but remain through at least Monday.  Poor air quality conditions continue in the 'moderate' to 'very unhealthy' range and those with health sensitivities are urged to take necessary precautions today.

Excessive heat warnings are in place for multiple communities, and the Del Norte's OES has listed 'Clean Air Shelters' (see below).

Yesterday saw extremely hot temperatures and poor air quality across most of KHSU's listening area. NWS reported a record-tying 87 degrees in Eureka, 100 in Fortuna, and a new record of 96 at theArcata-Eureka Airport (records only go back to 1992).

The Eclipse Complex fire, east of Gasquet is posing a threat to Big Flat, though the Triplicate reports that firefighters can keep it safe.

The Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services has opened Air Quality Shelters

  • Crescent City: Family Resource Center located at 494 Pacific Ave. (Closed 8pm to 10am)
  • Crescent City: Tsunami Lanes Bowling Alley, located at 760 L Street in Crescent City 
  • Smith River: Howonquet Hall Community Center(closed 8pm to 6am) located at 101 Indian Court.

Additionally, NWS has issued a Red Flag warning tonight through tomorrow morning, and the risk of wildfire is very high. They are asking that the public avoid sparks or flames.
