Arts instruction is not confined to and should not be isolated within arts classes. If you consider art in a broader context then no longer will artmaking be chosen as that to be marched first to the chopping block. This is the energy behind a plan which garnered Humboldt County Office of Education a $2.3 million grant from the federal Department of Education. The money is for a four-year Arts & Creativity Initiative which will provide professional development in arts education and arts integration for grade 3-5 teachers in Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake and Del Norte counties. It's about strengthening students' learning in all academic subjects. HCOE Visual & Performing Arts Program Manager Stacy Young secured the grant and she is Wendy Butler's guest on the Dec. 18 Artwaves program.
