Portland’s relationship with its police force is complicated

On the 100th consecutive night of mass protests against systemic racism and police brutality in Portland, protesters gathered in East Portland and clashed with police for hours. Police, who arrested 59 people throughout the night, declared the gathering a riot after a demonstrator threw a Molotov cocktail at law enforcement.

Portland police officers feel underappreciated and unsupported by city leadership, according to new reporting from OPB. Activists who have been protesting for months demanding police reform are also frustrated with the lack of action from political leaders. What is the path forward?
