Lawyers for a Portland man with two broken legs say a judge has granted him release on bail from an immigration detention center in Tacoma.
Emmanuel Ayala Frutos came to the United States at age 6 and had twice received status through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested him in March along with dozens of other immigrants in Oregon and Washington.
ICE said it targeted Frutos because he had pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to possessing a knife.
Frutos’ family has argued that his detention was inhumane. In January, he was hit by a car and broke both his legs. While recovering, Ayala Frutos was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
He was released Thursday afternoon.
Oregon Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley had asked ICE to release him.
As conditions of his release, Ayala Frutos may have to comply with probation requirements and continued mental health treatment, according to his attorneys.
