How did a section of Eureka earn designation as a 'California Arts Council cultural district'? "You have this concentration of energy and vitality," California Arts Council chair Donn K. Harris tells Wendy Butler.

Eureka is one of just 14 such districts statewide, and the distinction brings new grant money for public art,  "We want to advance all of California economically and otherwise through creativity and the arts."

Also on today's Artwaves, Calder Johnson discusses NCRT's production of The Liar. Dorante is a charming young man with a bright future and one glaring personality quirk – he cannot tell the truth.

Love and mistaken identity abound in this witty farce. Clitón, whom Johnson portrays, is the butler of the titular liar and conversley cannot tell a lie. The Liar is David Ives' adaptation of Le Menteur , the classic French farce

'The Liar' starts July 20 and runs through Aug. 10.
