The Sanctuary and the Humboldt Jazz Collective (under the direction of James Zeller) are excited to present “125 Years of Ellington”. doors 7 pm, show 7:30 pm

The show, the second in their “In the Constellations Now” series, will feature original arrangements of Duke Ellington pieces prepared especially to honor Duke on this special occasion.

The orchestrations promise to be very unique given the unusual line-up of Zeller (trombone), Tree (Baritone sax, Viola), Allison Muench (Alto Sax, Flutes), Danny Gaon (Bassoon, Double Bass), Katie Belknap (Clarinet),Gabe Lubowe (Piano), Lee Phillips (Double Bass), James Forrest (drums) and a special appearance from tap dancer Miles Schmidt. 

Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (b. April 29th 1899) lead his unique orchestra for over 50 years beginning in 1923 until his passing in 1974. He wrote or collaborated on over 1000 pieces, many of which are now standards of the Jazz repertoire, and is widely viewed as one of the most influential and important of American composers.

Ellington is famous for his technique of writing for each player’s individual technique as well as their musical personality. His penchant for adventurous and colorful chordal writing has deeply influenced the tradition of Jazz harmony. Zeller is excited to offer a short, imaginative suite of original pieces written expressly in this manner for the ensemble. Expect a lot of variety throughout the evening with new takes on classic Ellington numbers, a few rare gems, exciting ensemble explorations, solo features and a few tasteful vocals from the great harmony duo of Zeller and Belknap.
