Phil Klay has emerged as perhaps our most effective explainer of the theories, intricacies, complexities, atrocities and consequences of modern warfare. His book “Redeployment,” a collection of short stories emerging from his service as a marine in the Iraq war, won the National Book Award. His latest book “Missionaries” goes to Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Yemen, and — most notably — Colombia. Most of the book is set in that country in the run-up to the 2016 peace accord between the government and the left-wing guerrilla group, the FARC. OPB’s Geoff Norcross spoke with Klay as a part of the Portland Book Festival put on by Literary Arts.
