Arcata's 'Out of the Darkness' Walk Brings Our Community Together to Talk About Suicide

"We need to be talking about suicide and confront it and the stigma around suicide." Johnny Salazar came by the KHSU Magazine to talk about the Out of the Darkness Community Walk which takes place on the Arcata Plaza on September 10th. The Arcata Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 375 Out of the Darkness Community Walks being held nationwide this year. Last year, the Arcata Out of the Darkness event raised over $30,000 and had over 360 participants. The walks are expected to unite more than 250,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts. This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs, and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.
