Drug Imports

Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala put a roadblock into one of Congress' only success stories of the last session by calling a halt to the reimportation of cheaper prescription drugs from outside the country. The legislation would have allowed drugs exported to countries with strict price controls to be reimported to the United States at a lower cost. But Shalala, who has authority over the practice, blocked the plan. NPR's Julie Rovner explains.
