On Tuesday, Community Development Director David Loya (left) said 8-story buildings might be too large for Arcata's west side. In the Gateway Plan, Loya originally used the images on the right as examples of future Arcata development.

Arcata plans to rezone 64 square blocks west of the plaza to spark private housing construction. At Tuesday's Planning Commission meeting, some commenters praised the Gateway Plan's strategy of increasing the housing supply to drive down rents and home prices. But critics said the plan would facilitate too much growth too quickly. The city's community development director said that in response to public feedback, the city will likely lower the plan's proposed 8-story height limit.
