A large rockslide covers a section of the Columbia River Highway in Oregon near Rowena Crest Viewpoint, May 9, 2017.

A section of the historic Columbia River Highway is closed near The Dalles after a large rockslide on Sunday.

The closed portion of the road is near the popular Rowena Crest Viewpoint.

As of Tuesday morning, about 200 feet of the road was still covered with massive rocks.

Peter Murphy with the Oregon Department of Transportation says the road could be closed for two to three weeks.

“We’ll see a lot of people traveling the highway this time of year and it is going to impact their travels, so what we’re doing is advising people to turn around when they get to the top of the Rowena Butte if they’ve come in from the west, from Mosier.”

ODOT will bring in a geologist to assess the site. Crews will put large bolts in the hillside to prevent more rocks from falling.
