Portland Area Wakes Up To Snow — Again. More On The Way

UPDATE (11:03 a.m. PST) — Cities throughout Oregon received another coating of snow overnight Wednesday, and so far this month, Portland has seen its sixth snowiest February in the past 75 years. There's a chance for more on the way.

"As Friday afternoon progresses, we're transitioning to a wintry mix of snow and rain. Friday night and Saturday night we're fully transitioning into rain," said David Bishop, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Northeast Portland received 2 inches of snow overnight. Hillsboro received 3 inches and Council Crest Park, at more than 1,000 feet, received 3.7 inches. In Salem, snowfall reached just under an inch. In southern Oregon, a winter storm warning is in effect for Medford until 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

In the Portland metro area, TriMet has begun removing chains from all its buses as conditions improved late Thursday morning. It's also re-examining cancelling and detoured routes. Some chain removals will occur in the field, possibly causing delays. Removals will allow buses to return to normal speeds and are expected to be complete by the afternoon commute.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation had crews working overnight to deploy nearly 50 tons of road salt, including at new routes in the Northeast Alameda, Southeast Pleasant Valley and Mount Tabor areas.

PBOT still suggests commuters take public transit if they must travel.
