Nike, Adidas and other sports apparel companies have come under scrutiny for their funding of youth sports leagues. In some cases, the coaches of those leagues are also the parents of star athletes who the companies are sponsoring. On the U.N.’s International Day of Happiness, we talk with Christine Carter, a sociologist and happiness expert at UC Berkeley’s Center for the Greater Good. She tells us what the research says about what works to create happiness, and how happiness is different from gratification or pleasure. And she weighs in on some of the messages appearing on billboards in Portland, put up by the Vancouver, Washington, based group The Joy Team.
