In 2015, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) became one of the largest marine protected areas on the planet. As a result, the 157,000-square-mile-area of ocean became strictly off limits for commercial fishing activity. But a new study shows that the area saw a huge increase in commercial fishing right before the protected status took effect. University of Oregon economist Grant McDermott joins us to discuss his findings and what he is calling “the blue paradox.”

Last night, the City of Bend announced its first creative laureate. Jason Graham, aka MOsley WOtta, will serve in the position for the next two years. We hear from Graham about what it means to work as an ambassador for the region’s creative community.
