School Closures During Power Outages in the Bay Area

Over a dozen school districts were closed Wednesday and announced plans to close Thursday due to PG&E power shutoffs in Northern and Central California.

Here is an alphabetized, updated list of school closures:

North Bay East Bay South Bay and Peninsula

North Bay

K-12 Schools:

Alexander Valley Union School District: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Bennett Valley Union School District: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Cloverdale Unified School District: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Cotati-Rohnert Park School District: All schools are open on Thursday. Geyserville Unified School District: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Kashia Elementary School District: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Marin County Office of Education: Bolinas-Stinson School, Tam Valley Elementary and Tamalpais High School are closed Thursday. Mark West Union School District: John Riebli Elementary and the MWUSD Office will continue to be closed on Thursday. Mark West Elementary, San Miguel and Mark West Charter will be open on Thursday. Napa Valley Unified School District: All district schools will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. Old Adobe Union School District: Two schools — Sonoma Mountain Charter and Old Adobe Charter — will be affected by the power outage. The district said they would notify parents of closures. Piner-Olivet Union School District: Schaefer Charter, Jack London Elementary, Olivet Elementary Charter, Piner-Olivet Charter and Northwest Prep were closed Wednesday. Schools are open on Thursday. Rincon Valley Union School District: Schools that will be open are Village, Spring Creek, Matanzas and RVCS- Matanzas. Schools that will remain closed Thursday are Binkley, Madrone, Whited, Sequoia, RVCS-Sequoia and Austin Creek. Santa Rosa City Schools: Maria Carrillo High, Rincon Valley Middle, Santa Rosa Middle, Hidden Valley Elementary, Proctor Terrace Elementary, Santa Rosa Accelerated Charter School, and Lewis Education Center will remain closed on Thursday, the district said. This means all after-school programs, such as childcare and athletics, are also canceled at these schools. Sonoma Valley Unified School District: Schools will be closed Wednesday through Friday. Vacaville Unified School District: Buckingham Charter will be closed through Friday. All other schools plan to stay open. Windsor Unified School District: All schools closed both Wednesday and Thursday.

Colleges and Universities:

Santa Rosa Junior College: All campuses and sites will be closed on Thursday. All activities and classes, including online, will be canceled. Sonoma State University: All classes and activities at Sonoma State remain canceled through Friday, Oct. 11.

East Bay

K-12 Schools:

Acalanes Unified High School District: All schools will remain open on Thursday. Berkeley Unified School District: All schools will be open on Thursday, according to the district. Castro Valley Unified School District: All schools will be open on Thursday, with a contingency plan in case the district has to close schools due to a power shutoff. Fremont Unified School District: All schools will be open on Thursday, according to the district. Hayward Unified School District: All schools are expected to remain open on Thursday. New Haven Unified School District: James Logan High School Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. All other district schools are expected to be open. Oakland Unified School District: All OUSD Schools will be open, except for the following, which will be closed on Thursday: Fruitvale, Grass Valley, Howard, Montclair, Sequoia, Elmhurst United, Rudsdale Continuation, Skyline and Sojourner Truth. Orinda Union School District: All schools open and on a regular schedule Thursday. San Leandro Unified School District: All schools open on Thursday. San Ramon Valley Unified School District: All schools open Thursday. West Contra Costa Unified School District: Pinole Valley High School, and Ellerhorst, Kensington, Madera and Olinda elementary schools will be closed on Thursday. The closure also affects the after school programs and extracurricular activities at the five schools. All other district schools will remain open.

Colleges & Universities:

Mills College: Closed both Wednesday and Thursday. UC Berkeley: The university remained without power on Thursday, with students, faculty and staff being advised to avoid campus. Classes will resume on Friday if power is restored.

South Bay & Peninsula

K-12 Schools:

Alum Rock Union School District: All 19 schools closed both Wednesday and Thursday. Campbell Union High School District: The district announced no Campbell Union High School District schools are expected to be impacted by the power shutoff and all schools will remain open. Oak Grove Elementary School District: No OGSD schools are currently impacted, according to the district, and schools and offices will remain open and follow regular schedule in the event of a power shutoff. San Jose Unified School District: All schools were open Wednesday and Thursday despite any potential shutoffs, officials told parents. Santa Cruz City Schools: All schools are open. Only two schools, Soquel High and Westlake Elementary, are located in the area at risk. Generators and food services are ready in case of a power shutoff on Thursday.
