What You Need to Know: Sonoma County’s Kincade Fire

Updated Monday, Oct. 28, 8 a.m.

The rapidly spreading Kincade Fire started just before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, forcing approximately 180,000 people from their homes in Sonoma County. Cal Fire says full containment is expected on Nov. 7 based on how the fire has been progressing.

California. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency due to wildfires on Sunday afternoon.

Below is a map of where the fire is burning, the evacuation zone, road closures, resources and the areas in the North Bay where PG&E shut down power Wednesday in an attempt to prevent wildfires amid gusty winds and plummeting humidity.

This post will be updated when new information is made available. Here are the latest updates:

Acreage and containment: Cal Fire says the fire has consumed 66,231 acres and is 5% contained.

Steep terrain and narrow roads are making access difficult and slow. Authorities reported Sunday that the wind event is currently at its peak. Conditions are expected to improve Monday, but dry winds are expected to hit the area again Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Casualties: There are no reported missing persons or fatalities from the fire. Authorities said two firefighters have sustained burn injuries. One firefighter was transported by ambulance but the second was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center.

Damage update: Cal Fire currently says 96 structures have been destroyed, 50 of them residential. Sixteen additional structures have been damaged, and 79,675 structures are threatened.

Evacuation orders: The entire community of Geyserville, the hills east of the area and northwestern parts of the city of Santa Rosa are under mandatory evacuation orders, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Area under evacuation orders include:

Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital evacuated about 100 patients Saturday night out of “an abundance of caution”, according to KGO. Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa came under a mandatory evacuation order early Sunday, affecting about 100 patients, KGO reported.

“I think concerns [over the size of the evacuations] are not valid anymore,” said Essick on Sunday morning.

Law enforcement are currently denying re-entry on evacuation routes until it’s safe for people to return, said California Highway Patrol Capt. Aristotle Wolfe during a press conference Thursday night.

“Please stay home unless you’re being evacuated. We’d like you to stay off the roads, stay off the highways,” Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said at Friday’s press conference. “Please be vigilant. Stay informed. Be in contact with your neighbors, especially those neighbors that are older, elderly or infirmed.”

Air quality: The Bay Area Air Quality Management District Air District (BAAQMD ) says it is closely monitoring smoke impacts from the fire. They say to “expect localized impacts close to the fire.” An air quality advisory was issued for Sunday through Monday.

Sunday’s Bay Area air quality is currently good to moderate, according to BAAQMD. Areas closer to the fire zone are to expect to be impacted by smoke.

A Spare the Air Alert was issued for Monday due to smoke.

The BAAQMD said Friday in an advisory, “Winds are expected to increase significantly starting Saturday evening and, if there are no additional fires, will help move smoke out of the region. Areas closest to the fires are expected to have localized smoke impacts. Air quality impacts are still possible in the Bay Area due to unexpected weather shifts or local wildfires.”

The National Weather Service Oakland Center said San Francisco International Airport may be affected by the smoke.

NWS CWSU Oakland on Twitter Heads Up, Bay Area! Although the #KincadeFire isn’t causing smoke issues over the Bay Area today, shifting winds tomorrow will likely cause the smoke to be directly over much of the region. Impacts to SFO may begin as early as 11am Friday. https://t.co/3tlCIXIC5r
