In the latest installment of “Essential Sounds” from the Oregon Symphony, the focus is on education.
Violinist Emily Cole recalls taking violin lessons from her mother, and carrying forward broader lessons about learning with open curiosity and without fear of failure. She plays a challenging duet by Anders Hillborg, with Symphony Principal Clarinet James Shields.
Vocalist Alonzo Chadwick, who performs with the Symphony in its Gospel Christmas programs, sings “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke. Chadwick works with Portland organization Self Enhancement Inc., which makes change happen in our community by serving underprivileged families.
For the “Composers in Quarantine” section, composer Andrew Norman talks about the role of counterpoint in his music. Cellist Antoinette Gan plays his solo cello composition “For Ashley.”
This is the 5th of 6 episodes in the “Essential Sounds” series. The final one will be released Sunday, August 23 via the Oregon Symphony’s website and YouTube channel.
