After years of demand from students, faculty and community members, the University of Oregon is launching a Black studies program this fall. The program has been in development for more than two years, but its roots go back to the 1960s, when members of the Black Student Union advocated for the program in 1968. Over four decades later, the demands resurfaced in 2015 when members of the Black Student Task Force released a list of demands to the university aiming to address racial issues on campus. We hear from Avinnash Tiwari, the program’s acting director, about bringing the program to fruition.
