Monday Mix: Golden Aquarians, Aesop Rock, Fleet Foxes

Golden Aquarians is the production/musician team of Sarah Jaffe and Rob Sanchez behind the debut single “High Enough.” Jaffe has contributed her vocal talents to several artists throughout her career, displaying an amazing ability to float through genres, and this collaborative project is yet another seamless fit. “Golden Aquarians stemmed from the hours of conversations Rob and I have had about our shared love of producing music and the yearning for continuous creativity,” she told opbmusic. “High Enough” is a song that combines “blending Sampled beats, chopped synths and layered vocals with ethereal pedal steel guitar,” the duo state in a press release. Proceeds from this single will be donated to The Loveland Foundation, which helps to provide access to therapy to communities of color, especially Black girls and women.

"The Gates” is our first sample of the new album “Spirit World Field Guide,” which drops in November. The Oregon-based emcee has been in the game since the late ’90s when he emerged as part of a next gen explosion of underground hip-hop. And here he brings it as fierce as ever with blistering wordplay and creativity, making a strong statement that he’s nowhere near ready for retirement. While Aesop Rock’s lyrics leave much to interpretation, there’s no ambiguity in the boldly darker approach “The Gates” delivers, which helps to create the unique sound that allows the track to stand apart.

Fleet Foxes have just released a surprise fourth album, “Shore,” which delivers a much-needed pitch perfect calming tone for this chaotic time. The song “Can I Believe You” is driven by a powerful arrangement that reaches a whole new level when a choir of fans is introduced as the backing vocals. “Those choral voices are actually 400 or 500 people from Instagram that sent clips of them singing that line to me. And then we spent days editing them together and cleaning them up. There’s this big hug of vocals around the lead vocal that’s talking about trust or believability,” the band wrote for Apple Music.
