Oregon could be facing a huge financial burden — from $1 to $3.3 billion dollars — when the eviction moratorium ends in June. That’s one of the findings of the Portland State University Homeless Research and Action Collaborative. Researcher Lisa Bates says the costs from the anticipated mass evictions come from additional shelter, including emergency shelter, medical care, and child welfare services. An estimated 90 percent of those facing eviction have lost jobs, and about 40 percent are BIPOC. Bates joins us to tell us more about these families and some of the strategies the report details that could prevent many of these evictions — and the accompanying costs to taxpayers.downstream costs to taxpayers from evictions and how families will be affected.
