The first trailer for Blindspottingâs TV spin-off just droppedâand this time the focus is female.
The new Starz series is, like the original, set in Oakland and co-written by Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. Unlike the 2018 movie, however, the eight-episode half-hour dramedy will be told from the perspective of Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones). The longtime partner of, and co-parent with Casalâs Miles is seen struggling to make it work after Miles is incarcerated.
The trailer shows Ashley navigating her new life living with Milesâ mom (Helen Hunt) and sister (Jaylen Barron), working the front desk at the fancy Alcatraz Hotel, and supporting Miles in jail and in the courtroom. The show also clearly has surreal elements, with multiple spontaneous dance scenesâincluding one that breaks out inside a penitentiary waiting room. Diggsâ character Collin is conspicuously absent throughout.
âThe Bay isnât just in the backdrop,â Casal told SFGate in February. âLike the movie, the Bay is in everything the show touches. So much of the clothing is sourced from local brands and the music is heavily sourced from Bay artists. Itâs in the soundscapes, the dancing styles, the art on the walls. Itâs all carefully curated to bring the Bay to the world.â
In addition to co-writing the series with Nijla Muâmin, Benjamin Earl Turner (who plays Earl), Alanna Brown, and Priscila GarcÃa-Jacquier, Diggs and Casal are also executive producers. Casal is serving as showrunner and Jones is acting as producer. The series premieres on Sunday, June 13, on Starz.
