Portland delays vote on boycotting Texas after abortion ban

Portland City Council has delayed an expected vote on a boycott of Texas goods.

Portland made national headlines last week when Mayor Ted Wheeler announced he wanted to ban city business and employee travel related to the state of Texas due to the state’s new abortion law, which dramatically curtails access to the procedure.

The city originally planned to vote on the rule this Wednesday, but did not finalize it in time.

City spokesperson Heather Hafer said city officials needed to get a firmer grasp on what effect the ordinance would have on the city.

”Portland City Council is working together to best understand the impact of the draft emergency resolution,” Hafer said.

Hafer said the city has purchased $35 million in goods and services from Texas in the past five years.
