Heard in Humboldt: Cal Poly Humboldt Jazz Orchestra

Welcome to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU, a program where we play a range of live music recordings from Humboldt County.

Today we’ll be hearing another one of Cal Poly Humboldt’s ensembles, the Jazz Orchestra performing a couple of years ago at Fulkerson Recital Hall on Campus. The piece we’ll be hearing is "Isfahan", composed by Billy Strayhorn as a part of The Far East Suite, composed by Strayhorn and Duke Ellington after the Ellington band's State Department-sponsored tour of the Middle East and South Asia in 1963. Isfahan is a very old and beautiful city in Iran. The featured soloist on the Jazz Orchestra performance is alto saxophonist Rebekka Lopez.

Thanks so much to the musicians, the Department of Dance, Music and Theatre and Dan Aldag for providing the recording and some background on the piece. Thanks for listening and tune next time as we explore more live music from behind the Redwood Curtain.

Raised in Arcata, Stephanie McGeary has lived in Humboldt County for most of her life and is proud to share stories about this weird and beautiful place that she calls home.
