North Coast Conversations: Northern California Community Blood Bank

This week, we meet with John Gullam, Director of Donor Resources for the Northern California Community Blood Bank.

The NCCBB has been operating in Humboldt County for more than 70 years, providing lifesaving blood to residents all across the North Coast.

Due to multiple factors, including the pandemic and an aging eligible donation population, the demand for blood outmatches the supply not only in the North Coast but across the country on a near-constant basis.

The easiest way to make sure that blood is available for an emergency is by having the community donate whenever they can by either visiting the Blood Bank building in Eureka or one of their two bloodmobiles that travel around the North Coast six days a week.

There have been changes in eligibility requirements. Recently tattooed individuals can donate after their tattoo has healed if they had the work done at a regulated tattoo parlor by a licensed artist. Individuals who have had their Covid vaccinations are also eligible to donate along with cannabis users as long as all other criteria are met.

For more information and to determine if you are eligible to donate, please visit their website at NCCBB.net, or give them a call at (707) 443-8004. You can also follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay updated on what blood types are most urgently needed and where the bloodmobiles will be for the day.

Thank you for listening, and stay tuned for more episodes of North Coast Conversations as we explore more of what the North Coast has to offer!

Alejandro Zepeda has worked for KHSU since early 2020, providing news, PSA’s, and an interview show called North Coast Conversations to the station.
