North Coast Conversations: Life Care Humboldt

This week, we are meeting with Dr. Ann Lindsay, President of the nonprofit Life Care Humboldt.

Humboldt aims to provide a life plan facility where the elderly can spend their twilight years in a sociable and sustainable community.

Dr. Lindsay served as the Humboldt County Public Health officer for 18 years and had a practice in Arcata with her husband for 28 years.

During her time as a family practitioner, she made home visits to elderly patients where she was struck by the social isolation they endured. After a brief stint at Stanford University, Dr. Lindsay returned to the beauty of the North Coast and founded Life Care Humboldt as a way to ensure that elderly folk can remain in Humboldt County in a safe and stable environment with plenty of interaction and stimulation.

The nonprofit recently acquired a property near the Westwood area of Arcata and is expecting to break ground in 2024, and is expecting to house its first residents by 2025. Initial plans include 80 independent living residences, 24 assisted living places, and 12 memory/ nursing care facilities, along with a clubhouse and community gardens.
