Welcome to North Coast Conversations on KHSU. I’m Stephanie McGeary.

One of Humboldt’s most beloved university groups, the Cal Poly Humboldt Calypso Band is celebrating its 40th anniversary and, naturally the party will be in the form of a big concert this weekend. So for this week's episode, we sat down with the band's founder and director Eugene Novotney to learn more about the group, the history of the instrument and music, and what we can expect from the upcoming program.

The show, Masters of the Steel Drum, is this Saturday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at the John Van Duzer Theater. You can find more info and tickets at buytickets.humboldt.edu. For North Coast Conversations and KHSU, I’m Stephanie McGeary. Thanks for listening.

Raised in Arcata, Stephanie McGeary has lived in Humboldt County for most of her life and is proud to share stories about this weird and beautiful place that she calls home.
Alejandro Zepeda has worked for KHSU since early 2020, curating the news page, and working to add more locally-focused community content in the form of shows and PSA's to KHSU's lineup.
