Two volunteers who have devoted much time, energy, enthusiasm and a love of music to KHSU listeners are retiring at the end of 2017. Felicia Oldfather from Classical Corner on Monday mornings and Gregg “Vinny” DeVaney from Fogou on Wednesday afternoons are hanging up their headphones and moving on to do other things with their time.
Felicia started at KHSU in the early 1990’s when classical programmer Richard Stanewick recruited her to be a fill-in for him and other classical hosts. After some training with Richard, she applied for the early Sunday Morning Classical weekend shift which she really wanted to share with another volunteer. After some programming changes, Felicia moved to Monday mornings and created Classical Corner. As a classical musician, Felicia has given listeners insight into her musical choices and some of the subtle nuances in the selections that the average person might miss. Felicia brought a number of guest musicians into the studio for interviews about their performances throughout the years. We will all miss Felicia. She says she will have more time for her grandchildren. Felicia says she will return from time to time as a substitute host on KHSU's classical programs. Thanks for all the music Felicia!
Gregg “Vinny” DeVaney has been on the public radio airwaves in some form since 1977. He started at KHSU back in the mid-80’s.Some of the volunteer work he’s done include engineering public affairs shows, hosting This, That and The Other (now the KHSU Magazine), he has worked at live remotes, he hosted the Rabid Radio show in 1985, No Age Show in 1988 and then Fogou? starting in 1996. On Fogou Vinny has lived up to what he said he wanted to do with this show “tell the listeners stories, short ones, mixed in with cultural artifacts in the aural ascendancy. Fun yet insightful.” We've had the chance to see the world through Vinny's eyes and ears and listen to his often entertaining conversations with guests and his listeners. His two daughters Nila and Naroli were frequent guests on Fogou throughout their lives starting when they were very young. The girls learned to read underwriter credits, tell stories and interact with their father live on KHSU and we got to hear it all. It was often very chaotic in the studio with Vinny on air. He often utilized all of the CD players and turntables at the same time while reading from his different books of knowledge. When asked why he was resigning he said he needs time to create an Airbnb. We will miss Vinny on KHSU. No one can do a show that is as unique as Fogou.
