Cal Poly Humboldt’s student run radio station, 105.1 KRFH, hosted their first-ever 48 hour live radio show extravaganza. Prior to this achievement, KRFH has hosted biannual 24 Hour ‘DJ Zone’s since Fall 2022. This semester they decided to take it up a notch.
With over 50 DJs– compared to around 10 in 2021– KRFH concluded that 24 hours was no longer enough. The student DJs participated in the event from 4 PM on October 25 to 4 PM on October 27. The event consisted of music, talk shows, DJ mixes, a band performance, giveaways, and a Guitar Hero competition– all broadcast live. College radio is known for its eccentricity which makes KRFH particularly appealing to the campus community.
The station has experience with raising the bar having also completed 24 hours of exclusively vinyl radio shows last spring.
Greta Fennelly, station manager, who is currently challenging herself to ‘no digital media November’ played a key role in organizing the event.
“This year went really well, it was a great introduction to KRFH for all of our brand new DJs. The public had a great time and responded really well,” said Fennelly, who is graduating at the end of the semester. “I’m super happy with how it went and I wish I could be there next year”
For a first time DJ, like student Blake Knapp, the experience exceeded expectations.
“It’s really cool that we’re doing a 48 hour DJ Zone for the first time, because we have so many DJs now it’s warranted” said Knapp. “Some of the cool events we had were DJs taking on personalities and doing their own themed shows… We also had a radio drama doing John Carpenter’s “The Thing”, an adaptation of the 1982 movie… One of my other favorite events from this was doing Guitar Hero live on air, which to our knowledge is the very first time that it’s ever been done. We could not find it anywhere else”
It is clear that KRFH is working full speed ahead with bigger and better events every semester and no signs of slowing down. Keep an eye out for more events on their Instagram page @krfhradio and stream online at KRFH.net.
KRFH is broadcasted from Cal Poly Humboldt on 105.1 FM throughout Arcata as well as most of Eureka, Mckinleyville, and Blue Lake. You may even hear these college kids as far North as Trinidad and as far South as Ferndale!
“I definitely am excited for the next 48 hour DJ Zone,” said Knapp.
