Bear in the Backyard
Bear in the Backyard
Dusty has never met a challenge she can’t solve on her own. Building her own house? No problem. Growing all her own food? No problem. Her whole life, she’s been just fine on her own. But then a new neighbor moves in, and all of a sudden her garbage cans are in shambles, the branches on her apple trees are broken, and let’s not even talk about what Dusty stepped in this morning. Maybe Dusty has finally met her match…
This “live animation” shadow theater production silhouettes actors, cutout sets, and handmade puppets, and features live music and physical comedy. Created by a collaborating ensemble of writers, choreographers, actors, musicians, and puppeteers, Bear in the Backyard is a story about nature, the power of community, and hope.
The ensemble features Evan Grande as Bear/Turk, Victoria Timoteo as Bell/Deputy Pancake, and Alex Hilsee as Dusty. The production is directed by Jackie Dandeneau, with stage management by Ruthi Engelke.
Written by Tyler Olsen, the show features lighting design by Michael Foster, set design by Alex Hilsee, projections by Victoria Timoteo, and props and puppets created by the ensemble. Costumes are designed by Laura Rhinehart.
Sponsored in part by The Humboldt County Office of Education Seats to Theaters program, and the Humboldt Area Foundation, the Family Fun Series brings nearly 1,000 students to the theater during the week, with a few public showings offered April 24-26.
