Making Splits to Increase Your Hives

Making Splits to Increase Your Hives

This month's topic will be hive splitting - dividing a single beehive into two or more separate hives - a technique primarily used to prevent swarming and increase colony numbers. Hive splitting is a multifaceted practice, blending beekeeping with scientific inquiry into honey bee biology, genetics, and behavior. By leveraging these aspects, we can enhance colony health, prevent swarming, and contribute to genetic diversity, necessary for sustainable beekeeping. Our speaker, Rachael Riggs is a dedicated beekeeper, teacher and farmer who has been working with bees for over 7 years. A Master Beekeeper, she has been making splits and selling nucs for over 4 years.
