Last week we heard a selection from Cal Poly Humboldt’s Calypso Band and this week we’ll be hearing another university group led by Eugene Novotney, the Percussion Ensemble. Cal poly Humboldt actually has one of the largest percussion instrument collections in Northern California and features some really cool custom pieces, including several Marimba One marimbas.
We’ll be hearing two pieces today, captured live on April 16, 2023 at the Fulkerson Recital Hall on Cal Poly Humboldt campus — "Lucid Mantra" composed by Dustin Schultz, a piece that really lets those marimbas shine. The next piece is a segment of “Make a Joyful Noise,” composed by Ivan Trevino.
You can view the full performances on the Cal Poly Humboldt Music Program Youtube channel, and find more info on the percussion ensemble at music.humboldt.edu/percussion. Thank you to the Percussion Ensemble, and to Eugene Novotney and the Cal poly Humboldt music department for providing the recording. Thanks for listening to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU and tune in next time as we explore more live music from behind the redwood curtain
