Heard in Humboldt: The Jazz Mandolin Project

Welcome to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU, a program where we play a range of live music recordings from Humboldt County.

Today we’ll be hearing a recording of the Jazz Mandolin Project, performing almost exactly 20 years ago, on the Cal Poly Humboldt (then still HSU) quad. This recording was captured on Oct. 5, 2005 by Carl Shoemaker.

The Jazz Mandolin Project was formed back in 1993 by Jamie Masefield, who previously played banjo in several dixie land bands, including the Preservation Hall Jazz band, before switching to mandolin and forming his own group. The makeup of the band changed over the years, so It’s hard to say for sure which musicians are included on this recording, but some notable past members include bassist Stacey Starkweather, drummer Gabe Jarrett, pianist and accordion player Gil Goldstein and Jon Fishman — drummer and co-founder of the band Phish. Again, not a ton of info available on this recording, so we're not sure of the title of this song, but it is a fun one.

Thank you to all the members of the Jazz Mandolin Project, to Carl Shoemaker who taped the recording and to the university for hosting the show.

Thanks for listening to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU and tune in next time, as we explore more live music from behind the redwood curtain.

And if you’re a local musician who would like your live recordings featured on Heard in Humboldt, send us an email to khsu@humboldt.edu
