Welcome to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU, a program where we play a range of live music performances captured in Humboldt County.
After receiving some great feedback from last week, we’ve decided to play another tune from a recording we received of blue grass group Pacific Grass and Acoustic, playing in our own KHSU station during a pledge marathon way back in 1979.
This recording was recently sent to us by a listener and Humboldt alum, Greg Hardig, who recorded this from the radio onto his cassette deck and sent it to one of the artists, who digitized it. And it’s a really fun sort of time capsule of the station in 1979.
We emailed Jon Menig from the band, who no longer lives in the area, learned a little bit about this group, which was primarily composed of brothers Jon and Tom Menig, Rudy Gorke and Avram Segal.
The three met Avram Segal at college at HSU , who even at the age of 19, was an accomplished banjo player. Eventually they added a bass player and violin to the group and actually got some paying gigs around town. The group was invited to play live on KHSU during a “marathon” or membership drive. The station’s first every membership drive was held in December, 1979. So although we are not positive, we’re pretty sure this recording is from that very first marathon.
This time we’re going to play one of the group’s original tunes, written by Jon Menig. “Sensimilla Weed”, which you can probably guess what it’s about.
Thank you to Jon Menig and all the members of Pacific Grass and Acoustic and thank you to Greg Hardig for providing the recording. Thank you for listening to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU and tune in next time, as we explore more live music from Humboldt County.
