Welcome to Heard in Humboldt on KHSU, a program where we play a range of live music recordings from Humboldt County.
You may have noticed that we’ve been playing a lot of recordings from Cal Poly Humboldt student performers and ensembles recently, and part of the reason is because spring is concert season up on Cal poly Humboldt campus, a time when many of the student musicians are showcasing what they’ve been working on during the semester.
Today we’ll be hearing a group that has a concert coming up this weekend. Syncopation Station – one of Cal Poly Humboldt’s jazz combos - made up of Ava Williams on vocals; Giovanny Martinez on piano; Alex Hofer on bass and Conlan House on drumset.
The piece we’ll be hearing is a blues standard, “Nobody Knows When You’re Down and Out” composed by Jimmie Cox in 1923, in the aftermath of the 1920-1921 economic recession. A more famous version was recorded in 1929 by singer Bessie Smith and, with the relatable subject matter at the time, became popular during the onset of the Great Depression. You might also recognize it from a famous recording of the song by guitarist Eric Clapton. So, without further ado, we hope you’ll enjoy Synopation Station’s version of “Nobody Knows When You’re Down and Out” recorded live at Fulkerson Recital Hall on Cal Poly Humboldt Campus.
Thanks so much to the musicians, the Department of Dance Music and Theatre and Dan Aldag for providing the recording. Syncopation Station will be performing during the “Jazz Combos” concert this weekend alongside other groups “6 Minutes Late” and “Dan’s Damaged Outlet” – Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 pm at the Fulkerson Recital Hall on Cal poly Humboldt Campus. You can find more info and tickets at tickets.humboldt.edu.
Thanks for listening to Heard in Humboldt and tune next time as we explore more live music from behind the redwood curtain.
