The California Native Plant Society invites the public to view wildflowers at the Jefferson Community Center, Friday afternoon, May 3 (2 p.m. to 8 p.m.), through Sunday, May 5 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Hundreds of fresh wildflowers will be on display. On Friday evening, guests are encouraged to paint or draw the flowers. Some art supplies will be provided, and experienced artists will be present to tutor. On Saturday and Sunday, every half hour, pop-up talks will be presented. Topics will include violet pollination, invasive plants, and the carrot family. Guests may bring a flower to be identified by experts. And this year, the theme is wetlands, so plants of coastal salt marshes and flood plains along streams will have their own table, including plants with showy flowers and those that are wind pollinated. The Partnership in Music Orchestra will perform a world premier of the new work, “To Live,” by conductor Garrick Woods. This work will serve as the focus of a collection of music that portrays human emotion ranging from peace and joy to despair with equal measures of threat and opportunity, tragedy and healing. The new work by Woods suggests to us that while life can be both painful and beautiful, we must choose every day: to live. The first of two free concerts, titled “Hope in Harmony,” will occur April 20 at 2 p.m., at the Eureka Woman’s Club, 1531 J Street, Eureka. On May 5 at 2 p.m., a second concert will be performed at Fulkerson Recital Hall on the campus of Cal Poly, Humboldt.

It’s easy to take car parking for granted. For generations, our cities have required nearly every new building — be it a home, an office, a restaurant, or a bowling alley — to provide off-street car storage, and the result is that parking is so ubiquitous that people only notice it when they can’t find it or have to pay to use it. The impacts of all this parking include higher rents, sprawl, and car dependency, feeding into a vicious cycle of more cars, more parking, wider roads, and more sprawl. The good news is that a simple prescription exists to halt and reverse this condition: eliminate parking mandates, manage on-street parking using pricing, and use the revenues to improve the neighborhood and encourage less driving.
Join us for this free webinar with Tony Jordan, President of the Parking Reform Network (parkingreform.org). But be warned, once you see the truth about cheap and abundant parking, you’ll never be the same. Parent Project is a 10-week series where we go over topics like improving family relationships, using effective discipline to improve school attendance and performance, reduce substance use and negative peer influences, and how to address destructive behavior. It is an opportunity to meet with other parents in similar situations in a judgement free zone and begin to develop a new support system. When you feel like you have tried everything and nothing is working, we can help.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Gene Lucas Community Center beginning May 7th and ending July 9th.
