It is with bittersweet emotion that KHSU must say goodbye today to Carlina Grillo, who has served as our student assistant for nearly two years and now must move on to the next chapter, after recently graduating from Cal Poly Humboldt with a BA in Journalism and a minor in Forestry.
As a journalism major, Carlina certainly made the most of her time at Cal Poly Humboldt, serving as the editor in chief of Osprey Magazine, the managing editor for The Lumberjack newspaper and station manager for the student-run radio station KRFH. In addition to her managerial roles, she also created invaluable content, including writing a feature for Osprey on navigating sobriety in Humboldt, and hosting her famous show The Funk Hour on KRFH.
Carlina came to us in October, 2023 and has since recorded countless newscasts, promos and public service announcements for the station. She has acted as a liaison between KHSU and KRFH, helping us to cross promote content and writing several great stories on our website highlighting the work of the KRFH students. She also took it upon herself to reach out to the Wiyot Tribe, to help create a (coming soon) feature on the Wiyot language for KHSU.
During her time as an on-air reporter for both KRFH and KHSU, Carlina has covered everything from hard news – including wildfires, earthquakes, and student protests on campus – to the more fun stuff, including providing KRFH coverage for the Kinetic Grand Championship! In addition to all that, she is a great friend and a wonderful dog mom.
We wish that Carlina could stay with us longer, but with budget woes, Cal Poly Humboldt has decided, once again, that we cannot keep on an assistant. We are sorry to say goodbye a little sooner than we had hoped, but we know that with Carlina’s talent and experience, we are going to see great things from her.
Carlina’s contributions to the airwaves of Humboldt will never be forgotten and we all wish her the best of luck on the next exciting chapter of her life!
