The official motto and mission of the Chamber Players of the Redwoods is "Music you love, played by musicians you know." The first concert of a new season of Humboldt homegrown chamber music will reflect that sentiment and deliver repertoire that will feel familiar, while also piquing your curiosity with some lesser known composers and fascinating instrument combinations. The music begins on Sunday, November 2nd at 4:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka.
The concert will include an early string quartet by the father of the string quartet himself, Joseph Haydn, a contemporary trio for flute, clarinet, and piano, traditional and contemporary chamber works composed for period trumpet and pipe organ, and a 19th century duo for piano and the basset horn, a lesser known member of the clarinet family of instruments. Concert admission is free for everyone, and donations are also gratefully accepted at the door before and after the concert.
Part of the delight of these concerts is derived from the sheer number of local musicians who participate in any given season, and the ways individual interests and inspirations bring new repertoire and ensemble combinations to be shared with an expanding and grateful audience.
Whether these are short–term or long–term collaborations, everyone benefits as the performers have a venue to share their music, and the audience has the opportunity to hear new and familiar music and musicians, as well as support their friends and neighbors in the process.
One such group has made playing through Joseph Haydn’s complete catalog of 68 string quartets a lofty goal and a labor of love. One of those works, the “String Quartet in D minor, Opus 76, No. 2, ‘Quinten’“ will be performed by the affectionately named Quinten Quartet, featuring Humboldt native violinists Jenny Scheinman and Julie Fulkerson, violist Sherry McHurd Hanson, and cellist Elizabeth Morrison. Each of these musicians spend as much of their free time as they can exploring chamber music with other players who share the same passion for musical discovery. This will be a rare opportunity for the public to listen in as well.
Tre Amici, or three friends, is a trio exploring music composed for flute, clarinet, and piano. Flutist Nancy Streufert is a lifelong musician and is a familiar face at Christ Episcopal Church in both the choir and the clergy. Clarinetist Jared Coyle is a performer, a K-8 music teacher in Fortuna, a lecturer at Cal Poly Humboldt, and the new conductor of the Scotia Band. Dana Christen is a retired local elementary music teacher, church pianist, choral accompanist, and chamber music player. They will perform a contemporary work titled “Night Music for flute, clarinet and piano Op. 109" by the prolific American composer Lowell Liebermann.
Ensemble Prandau features local instrumentalists Franklin Stover on basset horn and Justin Ross on piano. The name of the duo is also inspired by the repertoire they will play, exploring the 19th century composition Divertimento, Op. 10 by the Croatian born, Austrian composer Baron Karlo Hilleprand von Prandau. After studying music, then law, and then building schools while also managing his family’s estate, Prandau dedicated the last half of his life to music and philanthropy by financially supporting young artists. He was also known as a fine musician and composer in his own right.
Clarino Consort von Humboldt is a local chamber music ensemble featuring retired Humboldt music professor Gil Cline playing historic slide and double-slide trumpets that predate the modern valved instrument, and Christ Episcopal Church organist Avery Alexander, playing the church’s beautiful Kegg pipe organ. Fine traditional instruments and finely detailed playing are what the “Clarino” requires, and this performance will not disappoint. They will perform “The Easter Egg Overture” composed by Cline for the 2025 Easter Service at Christ Episcopal Church, and a favorite work by 17th century English composer Henry Purcell titled “Eco Voluntary.”
